Emilie Ervin Powell of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, first climbed Mount Le Cont in 1956 while working in nearby Knoxville as a reporter for the Knoxville Journal and attending the University of Tennessee. In 1977, she ascended the mountain for the ninth time with Grace McNicol in preparation for writing the first edition of her book, Gracie and the Mountain.
