Apple Doll

What do you do with the biggest, reddest apple of the harvest? Sam brings it to Gram, who peels it and carves it into a fat, juicy, apple head. While the carved head gently dries by the fireplace, Sam and her family occupy themselves with chores, songs, and games throughout the apple season. The crisp, carved apple turns spongy and tan, then brown and wrinkled. Finally, the time is right. Gram tells Sam how her own Indian Grandma carved apple heads. Together, Sam and Gram transform the wrinkled apple face into a merry little doll.
