Growing up in Hickory, North Carolina, Matt Bumgarner spent many happy childhood hours at his grandparents’ home that overlooked the Carolina & North-Western rail line east of Hickory. After graduating valedictorian from St. Stephens High School, he pursued the study of electrical engineering and graduated from North Carolina State University in 1988.

A lifelong rail enthusiast, he still resides in his hometown with his wife and daughters.
