James A. Goforth, a native of Asheville, North Carolina, moved to Erwin when his father took a job as a machinist in the Clinchfield locomotive shop during World War I. He developed a lifelong love affair with the Clinchfield and, after earning a B.S. degree from the University of Kentucky in 1939, joined the railroad's engineering department in 1943. Goforth left the Clinchfield in 1973 but returned in 1979 and retired two years later. He still lived in Erwin until his death and served as the town's historian.
