In 1934 Whipple Clark Medford began writing a column for the Waynesville Mountaineer under the heading of "Uncle Abe." His column was native wit, written in an unusual style with special flavor. He was 77 years old when he began his career as a publisher of history books. He spent days going over courthouse records and talking to county citizens. With this information, he wrote histories that continue to be treasured by many.
