Born May 16, 1845, in Jonesborough, Tennessee, Judge John Allison was an ardent supporter of his native state. Described as faultless in honor, fearless in conduct, stainless in reputation, he was honored and respected by all who knew him.

Allison served his state in various other capacities, always commanding the respect of even those who opposed him. He became general counsel for the Bon Air Coal & Iron Corporation and remained in this position until his death in 1920.
